Gottsegen Orthodontics

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April 2nd, 2012

Visiting your dentist during your orthodontic treatment will not only help keep your teeth and mouth healthy while you have braces, but will also help keep the rest of your body healthy. The fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth-most common diagnosed form of the disease. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved. Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our patients about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Your dentist is specifically trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral health problems. Please let us now if you have any questions about your oral health during your next adjustment appointment. Take care of your teeth!

Which questions should I ask during my orthodontic consultation?

March 26th, 2012

When you visit Gottsegen Orthodontics for your orthodontic consultation, you’ll probably have a lot of questions. We want you to be prepared for your appointment and feel in charge of your orthodontic treatment decisions, so keep these questions in mind to ask when you come in for your appointment with Dr. Gottsegen:

• How long will I have to wear braces?
• Will getting braces hurt?
• Will I have to wear additional appliances to correct jaw problems while I have braces?
• What can I eat when I have braces?
• Are there certain things, like playing sports or playing an instrument, which I won’t be able to do?
• How can I make sure my teeth stay clean and healthy while I have braces?
• How often will I need to come in for appointments?
• How much will my orthodontic treatment cost?

Dr. Gottsegen and team are here to answer all your questions and concerns, and we’re happy to explain all aspects of your treatment plan and expected outcome. We believe your orthodontic experience should be comfortable, hassle-free, and most importantly, leave you smiling! Schedule your first visit with Dr. Gottsegen at our New Orleans orthodontic office or our Metairie ortodontic office today, and let us help you find your most perfect smile!

Ask Dr. Brad Gottsegen: Now that I have braces, what can I eat?

February 28th, 2012

Let’s say you just got braces and Dr. Brad Gottsegen has informed you that during your orthodontic treatment you will want to avoid eating anything sticky, hard, crunchy, or chewy.  What does this leave for you to eat?  Lettuce?  Nothing?

Luckily, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, created a variety of “braces-friendly” recipes that will allow you to enjoy your favorite treats without interfering with your orthodontic care!

Recipes include main dishes, side dishes and even yummy desserts! After all, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps the patient achieve the best possible results from treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics.

If you have any questions about the recipes listed or about the foods you should be avoiding during your orthodontic treatment, please ask us during your next adjustment, give us a call or ask us on Facebook!

Enjoy!

Ask Dr. Brad Gottsegen: What’s the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

February 24th, 2012

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Brad Gottsegen started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Brad Gottsegen decided to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics, which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn't it nice to know there's a complete dental expert here at Gottsegen Orthodontics to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

Cold season is here, from Gottsegen Orthodontics

February 13th, 2012

Cold and flu season is here yet again. The folks at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that a common cold usually includes sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our entire staff give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces. For the protection of other patients and our staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

And remember to constantly wash your hands and avoid contact with those who are ill! Stay Healthy!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

February 8th, 2012

One in four parents says their child has had an injury during an organized sport resulting in a trip to the emergency room, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO. That’s why Dr. Brad Gottsegen and team at Gottsegen Orthodontics thought February—also known as National Children’s Dental Health Month—would be a great time to remind our patients to be mindful of their braces and teeth while playing sports.  Here are a few tips to stay safe on the field this spring, courtesy of the AAO:

  1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
  2. Wear a helmet
  3. Wear protective eyewear
  4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
  5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact Gottsegen Orthodontics. Stay safe and have fun!

Ask Dr. Brad Gottsegen: “How do I prevent tooth decay during my treatment?”

February 3rd, 2012

Great question!

If you are brushing and flossing daily during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Brad Gottsegen, we think that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting Gottsegen Orthodontics), of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Tooth decay, which is caused by sugars left in your mouth, can turn into an acid, which in turn can break down your teeth. Children are at high risk for tooth decay because adolescents tend to be lax in their oral hygiene habits. Proper brushing and flossing routines, combined with regular dental visits, help keep tooth decay away.

If you have any questions, please be sure to ask Dr. Brad Gottsegen or our team during your next adjustment appointment, or ask us on Facebook!

Three-Cheese Macaroni Extravaganza, a hearty and braces-friendly winter recipe!

January 27th, 2012

It’s chilly outside, and sometimes nothing satisfies the team here at Gottsegen Orthodontics more than a hot meal. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) winter dish that is sure to delight. Remember, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment.

Ingredients
•    2 cups uncooked macaroni noodles
•    Water for boiling noodles
•    (optional: 1 or 2 onions, chopped)
•    (optional: 1 to 2 Tablespoons margarine for sautéing onions)
•    ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (fresh is best, but the canned type works too)
•    ½ cup shredded Mozzarella cheese
•    ½ cup shredded mild or sharp cheddar cheese
•    1½ cups milk
•    ½ cup bread crumbs or dry stove-top stuffing

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°. In a medium pot, boil macaroni in water until you can just cut it with the side of a fork; drain and set aside. In a medium saucepan, sauté the onions in the margarine until they are clear and tender. In a 3-quart greased casserole, stir together the macaroni and milk. Sprinkle with the cheeses and onion, then stir it all together. Sprinkle the bread crumbs on top. Cover and bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Serves six to eight.

Gottsegen Orthodontics, reminding you to protect your mouth this winter

January 10th, 2012

With winter sports under way for a lot of our patients, Gottsegen Orthodontics thought it would be a good time to remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this winter.

More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Many people think a mouth guard is effective just to protect your teeth. But research has shown mouth guards can also reduce lower jaw impact that causes concussions. Our staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists’ website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and facial protection.

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in winter sports! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook!

How valuable is your smile? From Dr. Gottsegen

December 2nd, 2011

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, we are dedicated to using the most advanced orthodontic technology in order to provide comfortable, accurate, customized orthodontic treatments. Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our talented staff have been creating beautiful smiles in New Orleans and Metairie for years.

The bottom line is, we know having a beautiful smile is important to you. It’s important to us, too.

In fact, in a poll conducted by Glamour Magazine last spring, people were asked, “If you had to pick between having perfect teeth, eyesight or hair, which would you choose?

Well, 44 percent of folks out there chose teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Respondents said straightness, whiteness, cleanliness, as well as the sincerity and sparkle of a person’s smile were all important factors not only socially, but career-wise as well.

Give us a call to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Gottsegen!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: “I got my braces. Now what?"

November 14th, 2011

We love when patients ask us that question! Now that you’re wearing braces, it’s just as important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen as you did before before orthodontic treatment began.

Braces are known to trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or remove plaque, which is why Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our team recommend that you brush and floss after every meal. We also encourage you to use a proxabrush to help with the smaller areas where your toothbrush doesn’t reach. We encourage the use of fluoride rinse as well; ask us for a recommendation.

When your braces are initially placed, your teeth are likely to be very sensitive. You may experience discomfort for up to 3 or 5 days, which is why we encourage you to eat soft foods during that time. Remember, the less pressure you put on your teeth, the less discomfort you will have.

You may also be thinking, “Okay, so what can I eat?” We would encourage you to avoid eating sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy snacks that can stick to your teeth.

Our team at Gottsegen Orthodontics will tell you it’s crucial to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, please call our New Orleans or Metairie office immediately to schedule an appointment for repair.

Lastly, in addition to visiting Dr. Gottsegen's office during your orthodontic treatment for adjustments, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.

Happy Veteran's Day from Gottsegen Orthodontics

Thanks to all of you who have given us so much.

Happy November! From Gottsegen Orthodontics

Emergency care with Gottsegen Orthodontics

October 28th, 2011

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, we know true orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but when they do occur we are available to you. As a general rule, you should call our New Orleans office or our Metairie office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can't take care of yourself. We'll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem.

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you schedule an appointment with Dr. Gottsegen. When working with your appliances, you need to know the names of the parts of your appliances so you are able to identify what part is broken or out of place. After alleviating your discomfort, it is very important that you still call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged for an extended period of time may result in disruptions in your treatment plan. Click here for instructions or give us a call to learn more! We hope you're off to a great Halloween weekend!

What’s the difference between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?

Do germs really live on your toothbrush? Dr. Gottsegen explains

September 27th, 2011

Good question. With fall season upon us, so is the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our professional staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope this tip helps! Feel free to give us a call or ask us on Facebook.

September is Self-Improvement Month, from Gottsegen Orthodontics

September 22nd, 2011

These days, Americans everywhere are putting greater emphasis on health, fitness and self-improvement, and more people are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their smile. September happens to be Self-Improvement Month, and our team at Gottsegen Orthodontics know that orthodontic treatment is an investment in self-improvement that will reap benefits for a lifetime. And, recent advances in orthodontia, such as Invisalign and more effective brackets and wires, now make orthodontic treatment more palatable for many interested in obtaining that beautiful smile.

Not only does orthodontic treatment give you that beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing alone may be difficult. A poor bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a poor bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Gottsegen would love to have you visit for a complimentary consultation. Please give us a call to set one up!

See you soon!

Back to school with Dr. Gottsegen

August 29th, 2011

Now that many of the schools in the New Orleans area are back in session, Dr. Gottsegen would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs, sports and family duties to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit Gottsegen Orthodontics this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients’ busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you’re unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

We’ll see you soon and hope summer is winding down nicely for all our patients!

Are you visiting the dentist during your orthodontic treatment?

August 23rd, 2011

Dr. Brad Gottsegen wants to know: Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your orthodontic treatment? If your answer happens to be yes, we think that’s wonderful! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our New Orleans or Metairie offices, of course).

Summer makes for a great time for a checkup, which can help you maintain good oral health during the school year, especially while you're wearing braces. Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not visited the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in New Orleans, Metairie or surrounding areas!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: What, exactly, are cavities?

August 3rd, 2011

Dr. Gottsegen and team know one word nobody wants to hear when they visit the dentist – especially during their orthodontic treatment – is Cavity! That’s right, the dreaded cavity; but what exactly are cavities and how do they happen? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed. Yes, cavities can be repaired by your general dentist, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities at home:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily

• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)

• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach

• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat/drink

• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months – or as recommended – for a teeth cleaning and check-up

If you don’t have a general dentist, Dr. Gottsegen would be glad to provide a few recommendations in our area!

We hope you’re having a great summer!

Does Dr. Gottsegen have your current contact info?

July 26th, 2011

We hope you’re having a great summer so far! If you are planning on traveling with family this summer or think you might not be able to make it to your scheduled adjustment appointment with Dr. Gottsegen, please let us know ahead of time so that we may be able to accommodate you, as well as schedule another patient at that appointment time.

Also, we ask that you give us a call and let us know if you have any new phone numbers or if your contact information has changed! Please call us with any updates to phone numbers and addresses, so we may be able to reach you. Thank you! Enjoy the rest of your week!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: How often will I be seen during orthodontic treatment?

July 18th, 2011

Thank you for the question. Treatment time and length always depends on the severity of the situation, but the appointment when you get your appliances (braces, expanders, etc.) usually takes from one to two hours. You'll then see Dr. Gottsegen at regular intervals 4 to 8 weeks apart for an adjustment, which typically takes 15-20 minutes. Our regular office hours are Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, our polite and helpful front office staff will make every conceivable attempt to schedule your visits in a way that comfortably fits into your busy lives.

Please understand, however, that no orthodontist can successfully see his or her entire practice each day outside of the hours from 8 A.M. until 3 P.M. Therefore (this relates primarily to patients of school-age), it is inevitable that, from time to time, some attempt will be made to schedule an appointment during a non-critical school hour so that treatment can proceed efficiently and without needless delays.

Obviously, some give-and-take is required on the part of both our staff and parents. We will be more than happy do our part. We invite you to schedule your first visit at our New Orleans Office at 504-266-0136 or our Metairie Office at 504-208-1263.

See you soon!

Smile! June marks National Smile Month!

June 6th, 2011

With June - also known as National Smile Month - officially upon us, New Orleans and Metairie orthodontist Dr. Brad Gottsegen and team today this might be a good time to remind all of our amazing patients to practice good oral hygiene between your regular visits to our office.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many more years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to thoroughly clean between your teeth.

* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart or as recommended).

What’s on your reading list this summer?

May 31st, 2011

With school almost out and summer only weeks away, some of us at Gottsegen Orthodontics have been thinking increasingly about the importance of reading.

Sure it’s easier to go play ball or kick back and watch television this summer, but our team will tell you that summer reading is a key step in being prepared for classes in the fall, as well as maintaining your skill level. Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff (as well as Dr. Gottsegen would be happy to provide a few titles. You may also ask a local librarian for some ideas or check out this list of 19 books to bring to the beach this summer.

We also invite you to share with us your summer picks or your all-time favorite books on our Facebook page!

Happy reading!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: When should my child come in for a consultation?

May 22nd, 2011

Many parents in New Orleans, Metairie and surrounding communities believe they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Gottsegen Orthodontics, only to find that treatment would have been much simpler if started much earlier. It's important to know that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.

"Ok," you're thinking, "what, exactly is soooo special about age seven?" Well, by then, enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Brad Gottsegen to make a determination about whether any problems are present. Also, by then, the first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what we call “bad bite.”

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For most kids, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age seven, please give us a call to schedule an orthodontic consultation.

What's your story? What made you choose Gottsegen Orthodontics?

May 12th, 2011

In the pursuit of the highest possible standards of orthodontic care, we utilize the most "state-of-the-art" appliances on the market today. Most excitingly, our staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics take full advantage of the latest scientific advances in metals research which permits us to move teeth more rapidly, and, at the same time, more safely and painlessly than ever before.

Whether you've visited our office for weeks or months, we'd love to hear your feedback about Dr. Gottsegen and our team on our Google Local page. It only takes a moment!

You may write a review here for our New Orleans office or here for our Metairie location.

Thank you in advance and have a great rest of the week!

One of the great ways to improve your confidence is to improve your smile. And that begins with a free consultation to our convenient offices in New Orleans or Metairie. After all, what better time to avoid having crooked teeth in your adulthood than coming in for a consultation with Dr. Gottsegen?

We invite you to give us a call to schedule a consultation or ask us on Facebook!

Have a great Mother's Day weekend!

Play it safe this spring, from Dr. Gottsegen

March 31st, 2011

Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s already springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it’s important that you consult Dr. Brad Gottsegen for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and others. Be sure, however, to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements we are trying to achieve.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Gottsegen. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Gottsegen will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment.

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with Dr. Gottsegen.

See you soon!

February marks National Children’s Dental Health Month!

February 1st, 2011

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, February is National Children's Dental Health Month, as well as National Dental Health Month, and Dr. Gottsegen and team thought we’d promote good oral hygiene among our patients with a few tips and tricks, courtesy of the American Dental Association.

• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.

• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and insert it between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.

• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruits and vegetables and avoid crunchy, sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, be sure to brush after doing so.

• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these drinks create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. If you’re going to drink one of these beverages, don’t sip on it throughout the day. Rather, drink it and then brush your teeth.

• Regular dental visits: in addition to seeing our team at Gottsegen Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months.

National Dental Health Month aims to increase awareness about the importance of our patients' oral health. If you have any questions about keeping your mouth healthy, or about your treatment with Gottsegen Orthodontics, please feel free to give us a call or ask us on Facebook!

Love your new smile? Tell the world all about it!

Thank you in advance and have a great week! We look forward to reading your reviews!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: How often will I be seen at your office during treatment?

January 16th, 2011

Great question.

We invite you to schedule your first visit at our
New Orleans Office at 504-266-0136 our our Metairie Office: 504-208-1263.

See you soon!

Invisalign treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics: How, exactly, does it work? [Video]

December 9th, 2010

We talked a bit about Invisalign a bit in a July post, and thought we'd share with you a helpful video that walks you through the process of Invisalign a bit "clearer."

The Invisalign system at Gottsegen Orthodontics is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer at our offices in New Orleans and Metairie.

Here's how it works: You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Gottsegen has prescribed. You'll visit our office about once every 6 weeks (on average) to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

If you've been wanting to straighten your teeth but are unsure about going through traditional orthodontic treatment, please give us a call to learn if Invisalign is the right option for you!

Enjoy the rest of the week everybody!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: Do cold germs live on toothbrushes?

November 9th, 2010

What's the deal with Halloween candies & treats? From Gottsegen Orthodontics

October 29th, 2010

We get it. Many parents in New Orleans and Metairie are worried about their kids going overboard on candies this weekend, sugar and other sweets, and for them, Halloween is a dreaded annual event (no pun intended).

Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our team will tell you that all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel. In addition, we also want your child to steer clear of sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty goodies.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommend softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Gottsegen Orthodontics as soon as possible.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween! See you next week!

How is Dr. Gottsegen doing? Let us know!

October 21st, 2010

Whether you have visited our New Orleans or Metairie office for a week or for years, we'd love to hear your feedback about Dr. Brad and Gottsegen Orthodontics! Now with the Internet, it’s even easier to write your thoughts and share them with the world. We'd want to encourage you to write a review of us on our Google page. It only takes a moment!

You can review us here.

Thank you and have a great rest of the week!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: Why are regular checkups so important?

October 8th, 2010

Yes, October is National Orthodontic Health Month. But did you know October is also National Dental Hygiene Month? It can be a great time for a checkup, which can help you maintain good oral health, especially while you're wearing braces.

Enjoy your weekend!

Dr. Brad & Gottsegen Orthodontics, supporting National Orthodontic Health Month!

October 1st, 2010

We hope you're having a great Friday!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have included information on protecting your braces, including tips for trick-or-treaters, braces-friendly Halloween recipes, facts about braces and treats you should avoid while wearing braces.

Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our staff recommend you check out the AAO's website as well for helpful tips on keeping your braces in tip-top shape. If you have any follow-up questions about keeping your braces in tip-top shape, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Brad during your visit at our convenient New Orleans or Metairie office!

Have a great weekend!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: What is TMJ therapy?

September 24th, 2010

TMJ is an acronym that we at Gottsegen Orthodontics use to describe the temporomandibular joint, or jaw joint. This joint is one of the most complicated in the body, and, in fact, is the only joint in the body capable of both rotary and sliding function (ginglimo-arthrodial). TMD, or dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints, is one of the most common problems we face in today's high-stress environment. These problems are commonly related to painful spasms of the muscles that act upon the joints and/or to structural changes within the joints themselves. Symptoms of TMD can range from pain in the facial and neck musculature to popping and/or locking of the jaw joint.

While treatment of such conditions can often be challenging and multifaceted, we take pride in our long-established success rate in helping people get out of chronic pain and suffering. Our goal in these cases is to create a new reality that is infinitely more tolerable, if not 100% pain-free. In all but the most severe cases, this can be achieved on a conservative, non-surgical basis. We would be happy to evaluate you for these problems to ascertain your individual likelihood for successful therapeutic intervention.

Our staff invites you to take the TMJ survey to see if you require treatment. Please print both sheets, fill them out, and mail them to our office or bring them with you to
your consultation appointment at one of our offices in New Orleans and Metairie.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dr. Brad Gottsegen, helping you understand cavities

September 15th, 2010

At Gottsegen Orthodontics, we know one word nobody wants to hear when they visit their general dentist is Cavity! That’s right, the dreaded cavity; but what exactly is a cavity and how do you get one? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your dentist here in New Orleans or Metairie, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Brad Gottsegen:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat or drink
• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

If you don't have a general dentist, let Dr. Brad or our staff know, and we can provide a few references!

Dr. Gottsegen wants to know: what's on your fall reading list?

September 7th, 2010

It's almost fall, which means back to school time for most of our patients at Gottsegen Orthodontics. Today, we wanted to remind all our patients about the importance of reading.

In addition to textbooks, it's always great to pick up a great novel or a comic book. Today, we thought we’d ask: What's on YOUR fall reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites?

Out of ideas for great fall reads? Ask us for suggestions, and Dr. Gottsegen and staff would be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian in New Orleans or Metairie for some ideas ...or check out these fall reading ideas that we came across today, courtesy of Borders.

Happy reading! Be sure to share with us your fall picks or your all-time favorites on our Facebook page!

Are you wearing your mouth guard this summer?

August 8th, 2010

Summer is here for another six weeks, and our staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics thought this weekend would be a great time to remind all our young athletes in treatment to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports - especially contact sports - this summer.

Only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. The next time you're in for a visit with Dr. Gottsegen, we encourage you to ask us for a mouth guard! In addition, the American Association of Orthodontists has five quick tips for keeping kids safe during sport activities.

• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eyewear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant, even as a spectator

We hope you're enjoying your summer, and invite you all to share your summer photos on our Facebook page!

Share your experience at Gottsegen Orthodontics with the world!

Seven, the magic number

July 25th, 2010

Hope you're enjoying the weekend!

Tell Dr. Brad and team: what are your summer plans?

July 18th, 2010

It's summertime here at Gottsegen Orthodontics, and that means a full season of adventures, vacations and great memories that last a lifetime. Whether you're headed to a family barbecue, an exotic destination, a camping trip, a baseball game, or just having fun in the sun this summer, Dr. Brad Gottsegen and team want to hear about it! Share your plans and experiences on our Facebook page as the summer rolls along, and be sure to post your vacation photos on our wall!

Happy (and safe) travels,

Dr. Brad and team

Invisalign treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics: How does it work?

July 11th, 2010

Perhaps you've been wondering what Invisalign treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? You might have wondered: Will Invisalign slur my speech? Will people know I'm in treatment? Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our staff will tell you that you're not alone in your concerns! Today, we thought we’d take a moment and discuss these clear aligners today.

If you've qualified for Invisalign at our office, you'll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week, month by month — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Gottsegen has prescribed. You'll visit our office in New Orleans or Metairie about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time with Dr. Gottsegen getting adjustments.

Dr. Gottsegen is a certified Invisalign provider, and would love to have you come in for a consultation. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics, please give us a call!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

Gottsegen Orthodontics, wishing you a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend!

For many of our patients at Gottsegen Orthodontics, the Fourth of July is a day of fireworks, picnics, playing at the lake or spending quality time with family. Most people recognize Independence Day as a time to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary of the signing of our Declaration of Independence. It's also a time to honor all our soldiers - past and present - who continue to place themselves in danger every day around the world so that we may enjoy our freedoms.

What about you? What are your Fourth of July plans? Are you heading to a barbecue? Hitting the open road with family? Are you planning on using fireworks? (If you are, please be careful!).

Share your July 4th adventures with us on our Facebook page! We even encourage you to post your photos! Have a FANTASTIC weekend everyone!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: "I'm almost 40 - am I too old for braces?"

June 27th, 2010

Absolutely not.

In fact, our staff at Gottsegen Orthodontics read a fascinating statistic recently: the number of adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent since 1996! It's true that braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great.

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely—to invest in orthodontics. Treatment with New Orleans and Metairie orthodontist Dr. Brad Gottsegen can be successful at any age, and we know that adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful and healthy smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Gottsegen would love to have you visit for a consultation! Please give us a call to set one up!

Have a GREAT rest of the weekend!

The importance of retainers, from Gottsegen Orthodontics

May 26th, 2010

If you've recently completed treatment at Gottsegen Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Brad Gottsegen will provide—or has provided you—with retainers.

After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Our staff, however, will tell you that retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Gottsegen is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Gottsegen, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call at 504-895-4841!

Ask Dr. Gottsegen: Who benefits from orthodontic treatment?

May 17th, 2010

Dr. Brad Gottsegen and our team will always tell you that braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers! Anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident to Dr. Gottsegen, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, not to worry! At Gottsegen Orthodontics, you’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Gottsegen and find out how orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!

Have a great week!
