Years ago, orthodontic correction of adult malocclusions was relatively rare, and it was therefore inevitable that adults in treatment felt a certain "stigma" when wearing orthodontic appliances. Recent generations in appliance development have altered that picture dramatically, to the point that our practice now devotes about one-third of its efforts to patients in this category. The advent of more cosmetic appliance alternatives (such as ceramic braces and Invisalign), coupled with recent metallurgical advances that significantly reduce treatment duration, have combined to create a virtual explosion of adult patient interest in our services. In many cases, adults who never had the opportunity as children to get their teeth straightened find that today's treatment procedures can readily make long-dreamed-for corrections a practical reality.
